I am a biblio-generalist with practical experience in special collections reference, cataloging, conservation, and collections management, as well as bookselling, book buying, and book and manuscript value appraisal. My academic interests include the history and future of writing and print, books and manuscripts, and their stewardship; cultural heritage crime and destruction; and the material culture of textual objects, all from as global a scope as I can manage.
Originally a librarian, my path has turned toward other book-related areas. Most recently, I bought and sold books at venerable independent bookstore Powell’s City of Books. I concurrently trained as a book and manuscript appraiser while assisting with my mentor’s projects. With COVID-mindful flexibility, I continue with the commercial side of books as an appraiser and collections consultant, maintain my links to libraries as a scholar and bibliographer, and use both approaches to preserve and protect textual cultural heritage whenever and wherever I can.
I particularly enjoy working with multiple formats, not just the Western codex, as well as in multiple languages and writing systems. I am interested in networking with book people from all areas, including libraries, bookstores, publishing, academia, cultural heritage, conservation, and collecting, as well as taking on compelling projects related to books, manuscripts, assessment, collection, description, and preservation. I am experienced in and open to work involving organizations, businesses, and private individuals.
My resume is here. I welcome inquiries related to any of the above.
Let’s talk about books.
Please contact me here, on LinkedIn, or on Twitter.
I’m happy to connect with potential clients, cultural heritage colleagues, scholars, and book lovers around the globe. (If you can teach me another language, so much the better!)
I share bookish-related images on Flickr and Pinterest.
I’ve collected a lot of physical and electronic resources related to book history, and I am trying to find the best ways to share them. For now, you can see my personal library of broadly book-related books here. I have recently taken my first delighted steps into Zotero, and a growing bibliography of my personal collection of electronic resources is here.
